How to Get a Standing Ovation

You know you want one -- that spontaneous eruption of applause and enthusiasm that has the audience leaping to its feet in approval.  Every speaker's dream.  OK, this podcast will show you how.  Follow the steps I outline, and I can just about guarantee a standing O.  I qualify the claim only because you have to do a decent job of delivering the speech as well, but that's for the next podcast.  One giant step for mankind at a time.  This podcast is based on my book, Give Your Speech, Change the World, and it lasts about 7 and a half minutes.  Enjoy!

Wow, Nick. You had me furiously taking notes in prep for my next speech. A gold mine of knowledge packed in to that 7:32!

I humbly suggest one more step, or maybe step 5a: Have a strong closing statement that almost commands people to get on their feet.

Hi, Jay -- Thanks for the comment. Your point is well taken; you do need to have a conclusion. The trick is to keep it short; if you've done everything right, you've ignited a huge explosion of energy from the audience in the action step. You want to surf that wave, not block it. So, get them to report on the results of the action step, if it has involved individual or small group work, and then wrap things up with a crisp paragraph or two.

Good luck with that next speech!
